Bere is a 6-row blond bearded barley that has been dated back to the 8th century, making it possibly the oldest cereal 'variety' cultivated in Europe. It has been used to make bread, beer, and whiskey, and for animal food. It is grown today largely on the Scottish Islands (the Shetlands, the Orkneys, and the Outer Hebrides), in mixed stands with rye and Shetland oats.
