Ingal was bred at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks (1981) in an attempt to increase the acreage of wheat grown in Alaska. It is very early, with a fair resistance to lodging and short (about 70cm) in height. The heads are short but plump with just a hint of beards, and shatter easily at maturity. The seeds are small with 100 seeds weighing a bit under 3g. There is an ongoing breeding project with this variety to decrease shattering and increase yield.
