Cherokee Trail-of-Tears is named for the forced migration, in the winter of 1838-39, of the Cherokee from Tennessee to Oklahoma in the course of which several thousand died. It has vigorous plants that give a heavy yield of slim pods somewhat shorter than the other varieties listed here. Green pods turning purple as they mature will develop strings if they are not picked promptly. Seeds are glossy black and can also be eaten as a dry bean.
